The smallest laser yet?

The smallest laser yet consists of a spherical particle  44nm in diagemter and emits visible light.  According to the developers, Mikhail Nogivov of Norfolk State University, Vladimir Shalaev and Evenni Narimanov of Purdue University and Ulrich Wiesner of Cornell University the nanolaser should have applications to biomedical diagnostics (mico flow cytometers?).  See Photonics Spectra, v.43, 10, pg 24, October, 2009
