Genetics

A major role of cytometry in Genetics is associated with image analysis and fluorescence in situ hybridisation (see also Cytogenetics link). Using these technologies, diagnosis of chromosome rearrangements can be achieved using 24 colour painting (SKY, M-FISH) or interphase analysis with locus specific probes and gains and losses of genetic material quantified using Comparative Genomic Hybridisation (CGH). DNA microarray technology is starting to replace the metaphase chromosome for many areas of study so increasing the resolution of diagnosis. Flow cytometry also plays a role, particularly with sorting for the production of chromosome-specific DNA libraries and paints as well as for cell cycle anaysis and ploidy determinations.
