Gerrit J. van den Engh - candidate for Technical Councilor
"I want to push flow cytometry and cell sorting to their technical
limits. I strongly believe that these technologies are only beginning
to reveal their full potential for biological research and medical
applications. Much exciting work lies ahead. I also believe that to
improve on a technology, especially one as complex as flow cytometry,
one has to fully understand all its aspects. My research has been
devoted to instruments that sort as fast and measure as precisely as
possible. This work has laid the foundation for the MoFlo cell sorter
and later the inFlux design. My mission is to disseminate the lessons
learned among as wide a group of young investigators as possible so
that they can continue the development towards truly simple and
economic cell analysis systems. After all, our goal must be to make
useful technologies available as widely, and to as many as possible.
My current research interests are plankton analysis in oceanography.
My latest project is a sheathless plankton analyzer suitable for
remote and autonomous data collection in the study of global warming."
