Zofia (Zosia) Maciorowski - candidate for Clinical Councilor
After many years spent on a variety of research projects related to tumor biology in labs in Canada, England, France and the US, I have spent the last 15 years running the joint Flow cytometry core facility for the Research and Medical Sections at the Curie Institute in Paris France. Born and brought up in Canada, I received my B.Sc. at McGill University in Montreal, and my MSc at Wayne State University in Detroit. My introduction to flow cytometry was in Detroit in the early 80’s where I gained experience in solid tumor flow cytometry. The Curie core flow facility is a typical busy core lab with a wide and interesting variety of projects and people, and where my peripatetic experience with laboratory techniques serves a useful purpose.
Candidate Statement
My first ISAC meeting was in Rimini in 1996 where I was struck by the generosity, openness and enthusiasm of the flow cytometry community. I think it is a rare group and we are very lucky to have among us so many of the founding members of this science, who are so approachable and unstinting with their time and experience. I feel that this needs to continue and to be transmitted to the next generation of cytometrists. For the last 4 years, I have been lucky to be able to work as co-chair of the Membership Services Committee with Laura Teodori, that little Italian dynamo whose energy enabled us to accomplish a number of goals mainly directed at encouraging our young students and scientists to be active members of ISAC and hopefully our future leadership. We helped to improve the accessibility and utility of ISAC membership to those in less privileged countries around the world. I would like to continue working for these objectives, and to build a strong and active student population. As a core manager, I feel it is also important for the people in front of the machines to be involved in ISAC and will encourage active participation of core managers and personnel. Last, but most important, is education. One of ISAC’s crucial roles is to educate, and to that end, web based learning systems and access to the technical and scientific wealth of knowledge shared among ISAC’s members must be a priority.
