FUNDING OPPORTUNITIES FOR SHORT TERM MOBILITY & YOUNG FELLOWS

The following is a list of links to funding opportunities for young scientist/students around the world. The sites below are not exclusively devoted to young scientists but the search has been done with particular attention to sites offering opportunities for students, young PhD and short mobility/tutorial projects. The list is partial and it reflects a very dynamic situation (web sites and opportunities normally have deadlines and expiration dates). However, we think it is important to pinpoint specific sites that do offer such opportunities: since the funding process is cyclical, most institutions announces new programs every few months.

We are announcing the experimental form of a novel tutorial service: assistance and counselling for applicants interested in these grant opportunities. We are scientists that successfully applied to a few of these grants. We are willing to share our expertise to contribute to the success of further ISAC applicants.

• Human Frontier Science Program (HFSP) http://www.hfsp.org/home.php
  The HFSP supports international, innovative and interdisciplinary basic research focused on the complex mechanisms of living organisms. There is a young investigator grant section (current deadline march 2008)
•  North Atlantic treaty Organization http://www.nato.int/science/ (current deadline june 2008)
  NATO offers grants to support collaboration between scientists in countries of the Euro-Atlantic Partnership Council and the Mediterranean Dialogue on projects in priority research topics of Defence Against Terrorism, or Countering Other Threats to Security; Partner-country priorities are also taken into account. There are six types of collaborative grant offered: Collaborative Linkage Grants, Expert Visits, grants to organize Advanced Study Institutes and Advanced Research Workshops, “Science for Peace” grants in support of applied R&D projects in Partner or Mediterranean Dialogue countries, and Reintegration Grants which offer the opportunity to young research scientists from Partner countries to reintegrate into the research communities of their home countries after a period abroad.   The EMBO Young Investigator Programme has been supporting life scientists in Europe since 2000. The programme targets researchers who are within four years of having established their first independent laboratories in an EMBC member state. The aim of the programme is to give these promising young scientists an added advantage in the early years of their independent careers, drawing attention to the quality of their research and enhancing their standing in the scientific community.

  Mostly job-search oriented, but search options include studentships.

  This company has an interesting and handy programme aimed to sponsor young researchers willing to attend international meetings. If you are European and you actively participate to a meeting (oral presentation or poster) you can pick up among 6 calls/year.

Austria

  Fellowships for highly qualified scientists of any discipline who could contribute to the scientific development of an Austrian research institution by working at it and who have not already spent more than 6 months in Austria (open).
• Erwin Schrödinger Fellowships http://www.fwf.ac.at/en/projects/erwin_schroedinger.html
  Young and especially highly qualified scientists of any discipline who have completed their university studies in Austria (open).

France

  Charity based funding agency. Normally, two calls /year include a section dedicated to beginners postdoctoral fellows.

  Scholarship for a training period in France, available at Master or Doctorate level (next deadline 2009 for the academic year ‘09/10)
• EC Marie Curie Researchers Mobility Portal http://europa.eu.int/eracareers/index_en.cfm
  It is a link-hub itself containing national and international calls.
• Blaise Pascal Research Chairs http://www.chaires-blaise-pascal.org/
  Each chair allows highly qualified, internationally acclaimed, foreign research scientists in all disciplines, accompanied if they wish by other research workers, to continue their work on a scientific project in a higher learning institution or research institution in Paris/Ile-de-France. Multidisciplinary. For senior, outstanding researchers, who can bring coworkers with them.

  Through an annual call for proposals, the fund primarily supports travel costs for exchange between a team at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and colleagues in universities and public research in France. Not just travel grants.
• Ville de Paris http://www.v1.paris.fr/en/studying/foreign_students/financing_studies.asp
  3 to 11 months in Paris to foreign post-docs and from 2 to 6 months to foreign seniors. The call is publiched on the web pages of the City of Paris.

  Charity based grants for scientists working in Italy in public or not-for-profit private Institutions: focus on genetic diseases. Founding opportunities include start up grants for young investigators within the Dulbecco’s Telethon institute.
