Cytogenetics

Image and Flow Cytometry are key technologies in modern Molecular Cytogenetics.  ISAC provides an international forum for discussion and publication of technical developments and new applications in this field.

Multi-colour digital fluorescence microscopy and image analysis is used extensively for the analysis of cytogenetic rearrangements using molecular probes such as cloned DNA fragments and chromosome paints. Using combinatorial labelling of chromosome paints with five fluorochromes, all of the 24 different human chromosome types can be painted in a different colour. Image

Flow cytometry and in particular flow sorting is used to separate individual chromosome types into purified frations. These are then used for making chromosome libraries and chromosome paints. Sorting of aberrant chromosomes is also useful for the molecular characterisation of chromosome breaks causing human disease.
