ISAC E-NEWS -- Fall 2004The First Resource (Core) Manager's Meeting to be held outside of an ISAC Congress will take place Friday, 22 October, noon-4 p.m. at the Radisson Riverfront Hotel in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. The meeting immediately precedes the annual GLIIFCA meeting (http://www.gliifca.org) that begins Friday evening. This event is collaboratively sponsored by ISAC and GLIIFCA. The meeting's purpose is to increase the networking opportunities for facility managers. The agenda will include plenty of time to discuss common core management problems and share solutions. The cytometry community has historically been a very supportive network resulting in development of new techniques and technologies over the years. More importantly, it has fostered many long-term friendships and truly has been the most collaboratively driven scientific organization in existence. Hopefully this meeting for facility managers will be the first of many more held in conjunction with regional user group conferences. Hotel room rates of $114CAN/night (approx $82 US) single/double are available Thursday through Sunday checkout. Reservations must be made prior to 29 September 2004. Contact the Radisson at 800-333-3333. Complementary breakfast is included in the hotel room rate. The meeting will include a working lunch? consisting of box lunches for $12.95 (unless a financial sponsor is identified). To be included in the lunch order, RSVP to Julie Auger (jauger@flowcity.bsd.uchicago.edu) by 5 October. The formal meeting agenda will be posted at http://www.gliifca.org. Back to top ISAC 2006 Congress by Paul Robinson, President-Elect and 2006 Congress Chair jpr@flowcyt.cyto.purdue.eduPlanning has already begun for the 2006 ISAC Congress. It is important to us that ISAC members have the opportunity to provide us with valuable input. So, if you have suggestions that you would like to share, please send those comments directly to me. If there are sessions that you think should be there and areas of interest that you don't think we pay attention to, now is your opportunity to put in your opinions. Please send me an e-mail at jpr@flowcyt.cyto.purdue.edu and give me your ideas! Helpful Web sites: Back to top ISAC Programs to Support Organization of Meetings by John Nolan jnolan@ljbi.org The Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC) can recommend ISAC funding for (a) ISAC sponsorship of meetings and workshops, (b) ISAC loans for organizing meetings and workshops, and (c) ISAC grants for organizing meetings and workshops. The SAC has $15,000 available for such activities this current fiscal year. For more information, contact ISAC Executive Director Rick Koepke at rkoepke@isac-net.org. Check out the Web site at http://www.gliifca.org. Start preparing your posters and your party costumes GLIIFCA 13 is only a few months away! The theme of the 13th annual meeting is Innovation.? This theme will not only be represented in the symposia but is also reflected in a new location and a change in dates. GLIIFCA 13 will be held in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, (across the river from Detroit) the fourth weekend in October. The change in venue will provide for new explorations? outside of the hotel while providing excellent conference accommodations. Scheduling the fourth weekend of the month rather than the first provides for breathing space after 1 October grant deadlines. We are looking forward to these changes. The preliminary program (developed by Chair Maurice O'Gorman, Kathy Schell and Bruce Pesch) begins on Friday, 22 October, with an industry science session followed by our traditional Friday evening reception. Saturday symposia topics include Technological Innovation in Cytometry, New Applications in Cytometry and the meeting favorite luncheon roundtables covering a plethora of topics. The Carleton and Sigrid Stewart Dedication Lecture will be delivered by Robert G. Hawley, Ph.D., executive director of Cell Therapy Research and Development at the American Red Cross–Holland Laboratory. His lecture is titled Rainbow Reporters for Multispectral Marking and Genetic Modification of Hematopoietic Stem Cells.? The Sunday morning symposium will focus on development and applications in clinical cytometry. A GLIIFCA tradition includes a Saturday night dinner and costume party including a prize for the best costume. The theme for this year's banquet has not been finalized. But considering it is only one week before Halloween, think scary, superstitious (13) or innovative!
