Quantitative Biology for the Clinic
20-22 November 2003
Yosemite National Park, CA USA

Conference Planning Committee
Joe Gray, Ph.D.
Maria Pallavicini, Ph.D.
Graeme Hodgson, Ph.D.

Scientific Program

Keynote Speakers Rene Bernards, Ph.D.
The Netherlands Cancer Institute
Division of Molecular Carcinogenesis

  Dr. Susanne Huttner
University of California Discovery Program

Session I

Cancer Susceptibility

New approaches to new susceptibility gene discovery and practical aspects of testing for known susceptibility genes.

Speakers:

Charles R. Cantor, Ph.D.
Gigi Lozano, Ph.D.
Allan Balmain, Ph.D., FRSE
Brian Ward, Ph.D.

Session II

Cancer Detection

Both serum and cell-based assays for cancer detection will be discussed. Speakers will address assays for early cancer detection, detection of residual and recurrent disease and detection of disseminated metastatic cells.

Speakers:

Noel L.Warner, Ph.D.
Steve Seelig, M.D., Ph.D.
Gordon B. Mills, M.D., Ph.D.

Session III

Prediction and Prognosis

This session will address predictive and prognostic markers. Predictive markers reveal tumor or host characteristics that influence response to specific therapies. Prognostic markers are those that reveal intrinsic tumor characteristics that determine disease behavior.

Speakers:

John Sninsky, Ph.D.
David Eberhard, Ph.D.
Laura J. Esserman, M.D., M.B.A.
Suzanne Fuqua, Ph.D.

Session IV Bioinformatics

Presenters will discuss academic, industrial and U.S. efforts to collect, manage and interpret clinical and research information that arises during the course of translational research.

Speakers:

Mike Eisen, Ph.D.
Ken Buetow, Ph.D.
Barry Robson, Ph.D.

Session V

Therapeutic Targets (Identification and Validation)

This session will focus on approaches to identifying new therapeutic targets and the development of targeted therapies. These talks will cover practical, scientific and business aspects of target validation and therapy development.

Speakers:

Geoff Wahl, Ph.D.
Lans Taylor, Ph.D.
Brian Mullaney, M.D., Ph.D.
Don Small, M.D., Ph.D.

Keynote Speakers

Dr. Rene Bernards
Dr. Bernards has done pioneering work on small inhibitory RNAs and on the identification of markers that predict progression in breast cancer. Several aspects of this work required academic-industrial interactions.

Dr. Susanne Huttner
Dr. Huttner from the University of California Discovery Program will deliver the second keynote address. She will discuss features, successes and failures of a California state program to stimulate academic-industrial interactions.
