Approaches to managing a cytometry facility vary widely depending on many factors that can be unique to a particular environment. The Laboratory has to align itself with the general management structure and ethos to meet the needs of the users and the goals of the host Institution. There are many levels of interaction with end-users, line manages, upper management, vendors and others, all of which need to be approached in different ways. Additionally, the facility may need to produce independent research and would certainly need to show that it was 'productive'. Many of these factors are the most difficult to quantify and are the hardest to set-up from scratch but this section aims to show how this can be done using 'real life' examples.
